Into the Wild began as a warm-up exercise I did one morning, in which I randomly swept marks across a large sheet of watercolour paper divided with tape into smaller sections. One of those sections particularly appealed to me as an abstract landscape, and for weeks I kept thinking about it. Finally, I decided to paint a larger version of it. Possibly because it had been on my mind for so long, the design already clear to me, once I began, the work went much faster than usual. A few days later, I thought I should maybe tidy up a few bits here and there – and almost destroyed the piece. I soon realized it needed to stay loose, so decided to just let it be.
